Gustav Metzger, Shot on Ilford film.
The universe is always speaking to us, reminding us to stop and to pay attention to what’s happening around us.
In 2011, on my bus journey home one evening, I helped an elderly man who was struggling off of a bus and walked him to his front door. That man was Gustav Metzger.
I believe that the universe brings the right people into our lives at the right times, to give us a message, to teach us a lesson or to guide us on our journey. I had just lost my dad when I met Gustav. He played a big part in helping me work through my grief. He reminded me that life is precious and that death gives meaning to our existence. He reawakened my passion for photography and art, creatively inspiring and challenging me. He became my teacher, my mentor and my friend.
With time and trust he allowed me to photograph him and when the project came to an end, Gustav and I selected the images that went on to form a part of ‘The Story of How We Met’, a project that intends to portray, through photography and poetry, the power of human connection, intimacy and friendship, and how values such as kindness, care and compassion can lead to further creation and connection.
